  An  herbaceous  plant  of  the  nightshade  family  ({Physalis 
  alkekengi})  and  its  fruit,  which  is  a  well  flavored  berry, 
  the  size  of  a  cherry,  loosely  inclosed  in  a  enlarged  leafy 
  calyx;  --  also  called  {winter  cherry},  {ground  cherry},  and
