  attenuare  ad  +  tenuare  to  make  thin,  tenuis  thin.  See

  1.  To  make  thin  or  slender,  as  by  mechanical  or  chemical 
  action  upon  inanimate  objects,  or  by  the  effects  of 
  starvation,  disease,  etc.,  upon  living  bodies.
