a A spreading thorny shrub or small tree ({Prunus
spinosa}), with blackish bark, and bearing little
black plums, which are called sloes; the sloe.
b A species of {Crat[ae]gus} or hawthorn ({C.
tomentosa}). Both are used for hedges.
