  Bombard  \Bom"bard\,  n.  [F.  bombarde,  LL  bombarda,  fr  L.  bombus 
  +  -ard.  Cf  {Bumper},  and  see  {Bomb}.] 
  1.  (Gun.)  A  piece  of  heavy  ordnance  formerly  used  for 
  throwing  stones  and  other  ponderous  missiles.  It  was  the 
  earliest  kind  of  cannon.
