  An  elementary  principle  or  maximum;  a  short,  proverbial  rule 
  in  law,  ethics,  or  metaphysics. 
  The  legal  brocard,  ``Falsus  in  uno,  falsus  in 
  omnibus,''  is  a  rule  not  more  applicable  to  other
