Clever \Clev"er\, a. [Origin uncertain. Cf OE cliver eager,
AS clyfer (in comp.) cloven; or clifer a claw, perh.
connected with E. cleave to divide, split, the meaning of E.
clever perh. coming from the idea of grasping, seizing (with
the mind).]
