  A  king  of  Lydia  who  flourished  in  the  6th  century  b.  c.,  and 
  was  renowned  for  his  vast  wealth;  hence  a  common  appellation 
  for  a  very  rich  man;  as  he  is  a  veritable  Cr[oe]sus.
