  Algiers,  consecrated  at  length  to  the  commanding  officer  of 
  that  corps,  who  frequently  became  afterward  pasha  or  regent 
  of  that  province;  hence  the  European  misnomer  of  dey,  as 
  applied  to  the  latter:  cf  F.  dey.]
