distinguer L. distinguere distinctum di- = dis- +
stinguere to quench, extinguish; prob. orig., to prick, and
so akin to G. stechen, E. stick, and perh. sting. Cf

distinctive or discernible by exhibiting differences; to
mark off by some characteristic.
