  Icel.  &  Dan.  fugl,  Sw  fogel,  f[*a]gel,  Goth.  fugls;  of 
  unknown  origin,  possibly  by  loss  of  l,  from  the  root  of 
  E.  fly,  or  akin  to  E.  fox,  as  being  a  tailed  animal.]
