Spondee \Spon"dee\, n. [L. spondeus Gr ? (sc. ?), fr ? a
drink offering, libation, fr ? to pour out make a libation:
cf F. spond['e]e. So called because at libations slow,
solemn melodies were used chiefly in this meter.] (pros.)
