  foundation,  firm  seat;  akin  to  E.  stand  [root]163.  See 
  {Stand},  v.  i.]  [Formerly  written  {stadle}.] 
  1.  Anything  which  serves  for  support;  a  staff;  a  prop;  a 
  crutch;  a  cane.
