'imm[=a]n?[=e]l, fr 'im with + [=a]n? us + [=e]l God.] God with us -- an appellation of the Christ. --Is. vii. 14. Matt. i. 23. From Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary [easton]: Immanuel God with us In the Old Testament it occurs only in Isa. 7:14 and 8:8. Most Christian interpreters have regarded these words as directly and exclusively a prophecy of our Saviour, an interpretation borne out by the words of the evangelist Matthew (1:23).
