  A  house  of  correction  for  the  confinement  of  disorderly 
  persons;  --  so  called  from  a  hospital  built  in  1553  near  St 
  Bride's  (or  Bridget's)  well  in  London,  which  was 
  subsequently  a  penal  workhouse.
