  1.  (Bot.)  A  large  coarse  herb  ({Inula  Helenium}),  with 
  composite  yellow  flowers.  The  root,  which  has  a  pungent 
  taste,  is  used  as  a  tonic,  and  was  formerly  of  much  repute 
  as  a  stomachic.
