  Ortolan  \Or"to*lan\,  n.  [F.,  fr  It  ortolano  ortolan,  gardener, 
  fr  L.  hortulanus  gardener,  fr  hortulus  dim.  of  hortus 
  garden.  So  called  because  it  frequents  the  hedges  of  gardens.
