  Ratchet  \Ratch"et\,  n.  [Properly  a  diminutive  from  the  same  word 
  as  rack:  cf  F.  rochet.  See  2d  {Ratch},  {Rack}  the 
  instrument.] 
  1.  A  pawl,  click  or  detent,  for  holding  or  propelling  a 
  ratchet  wheel,  or  ratch,  etc
