['e]pinaie, from L. spinetum a thicket of thorns, fr spina a thorn. See {Spine}.] A small thicket or grove with undergrowth; a clump of trees. [Written also {spinney}, and {spinny}.] The downs rise steep, crowned with black fir spinnies. --C. Kingsley.
