The axis or receptacle in certain ferns (as {Trichomanes}), which bears the sporangia. From Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913) [web1913]: Trichomanes \Tri*chom"a*nes\, n. [L., a kind of plant, from Gr ?.] (Bot.) Any fern of the genus {Trichomanes}. The fronds are very delicate and often translucent, and the sporangia are borne on threadlike receptacles rising from the middle of cup-shaped marginal involucres.
