An aniline dye obtained as an amorphous substance having a green bronze surface color, which dissolves to a shade of red; also the color; -- so called from Magenta, in Italy, in allusion to the battle fought there about the time the dye was discovered. Called also {fuchsine}, {rose["i]ne}, etc From Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913) [web1913]: Fuchsine \Fuch"sine\, n. [Named by the French inventor, from Fuchs a fox, the German equivalent of his own name Renard.] (Chem.) Aniline red; an artificial coal-tar dyestuff, of a metallic green color superficially, resembling cantharides, but when dissolved forming a brilliant dark red.
